Voters in 2026 repeatedly ranked the cost of living (groceries, gas, housing, healthcare) as the top issue. Democratic leaders (Jeffries, Schumer, and others) explicitly framed their midterm case around lowering those costs and “delivering dramatic change” on affordability. The following lists the strongest candidates for real accountability: 1) Restore enhanced ACA subsidies — This was a near-universal, specific, early priority (“first 100 hours”). It is measurable (premiums for millions of people) and was allowed to expire under Republican control. Failure here would be hard to spin. 2) Reverse key Medicaid cuts from the 2025 reconciliation bill. Starting no later than January 1, 2027 most adults ages 19–64 covered through the Affordable Care Act Medicaid expansion must show they are meeting work or related activities. The threshold is generally at least 80 hours per month of work, community service, participation in a work program, or half-time school enrollment, or a combination. Exemptions exist for groups such as parents of children 13 and under, people who are medically frail, and people in substance-use disorder treatment, among others. The Congressional Budget Office projected this provision alone would produce the largest share of the law’s Medicaid savings, roughly $326 billion over ten years. Again, a concrete, widely cited promise. 3) Meaningful action on the broader affordability package i.e. grocery/gas/housing/utility costs, child tax credit expansion, nutrition program restorations, anti-gouging measures. Partial or symbolic wins would not match Jeffries' rhetoric of “bold, dramatic change.” 4) Tariffs and the Iran war are secondary but still relevant because Democrats linked both directly to higher gas, fertilizer, and grocery prices. Constraining or rolling them back would be a tangible delivery; mere resolutions without effect would not. 5) Oversight and investigations (Trump family business, Epstein files, ICE, etc.) are real powers Democrats now hold and have loudly promised. Voters who primarily wanted lower prices may view endless hearings as secondary or even distracting if affordability items stall. Progressives will push harder here.
