While flying at approximately 35,000 feet, the pilots began reporting icing conditions and moderate turbulence. They requested a higher altitude in an attempt to find better flying conditions. But things quickly took a terrifying turn. The aircraft suddenly began losing altitude at an alarming rate. The pilots declared an emergency and sent distress calls to air traffic control. In one of the final communications, the pilot reported that the aircraft was descending at approximately 20,000 feet per minute. The situation was rapidly getting out of control.
