OK folks, hold onto your hats - here we go, with my annual live-tweeting of my reading of @condenast@voguemagazine#SeptemberIssue. What do we think we'll find this year? I'm guessing, what we find every year: #carefullycalibrateddiversity, lack of age/body diversity, appalling waste of celebrities, every ad looking pretty much the same as every other ad. Let's see, shall we? 🙂
I really never feel the experience of, ‘how did I get this lucky’. Because there’s no luck at all. It’s devotion. It’s perseverance. It’s alignment. It’s accountability. It’s patience. It’s hundreds of conversations with God.
The transplant vs NYC native beef is all a microcosm of gentrification & capitalism. Folks are being displaced, rent & food costs are high, the culture & folks are adapting, it’s not the NYC it used to be & that’s fair. It’s not our people’s fault but we can still be active in it. Folks just need community that makes space for many lived Black realities in NYC. Socially, economically, and culturally.
@shannon_sense Viral moments don’t really show what was there. I met friend’s mother, kids and partners at that same block party that people are saying didn’t have any community. There were native NYers and transplants. The outrage is weird and doesn’t make sense.
The thing i like about the Brooklyn Block party is transplants or not, curated to look a certain way or not, in Brooklyn over the years there's been a concerted effort to take the Black out of Brooklyn. So with so many beautiful Black ppl congregating peacefully it's a statement
One thing Jacquemus does very well is world building. The product comes second to the marketing I fear, but I ultimately think not aligning the two will hurt in the long run
fashion writing increasingly feeling like a plutocratic vacuum, too much on personal style and "getting dressed" and not enough inquiring into the Great Flattening of fashion shows and fashion culture
