A heat dome has formed across the United States — bringing widespread, record-breaking heat and a threat of severe storms.
A colossal heat dome is preparing to settle over the central United States, threatening to unleash some of the most widespread and intense temperatures of the year across the Midwest, Ohio Valley, and Mississippi Valley.
Forecasters warn that actual temperatures could soar near 100°F (38°C), while afternoon RealFeel values may exceed triple digits for hours at a time.
This oppressive phenomenon occurs when a powerful ridge of high pressure acts as an atmospheric lid, trapping air underneath. As this trapped air slowly sinks, it compresses and heats up, while simultaneously blocking cooler air masses from moving in to offer relief.
The impending heatwave is expected to be amplified by high humidity from recent rainfalls, which hinders the human body's natural cooling mechanisms. Urban areas face heightened risks due to the 'heat island' effect, where concrete and asphalt absorb solar radiation during the day and slowly release it overnight, leaving little reprieve after sunset. Adding to the danger, meteorologists warn that the boundary of this massive heat dome could trigger severe weather. Violent thunderstorms and fast-moving derechos—destructive, long-lived windstorms—are projected to race along the northern edge of the dome, delivering a dual threat of extreme heat and hazardous storms.

With inflation topping 4%, the Trump administration is easing off its long-standing calls for the Federal Reserve to immediately cut interest rates. That is giving new Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh an extended political grace period as he deals with a challenging economic environment, but underscores the depth of the pushback he could face if the mercurial president changes his mind.
President Donald Trump said as recently as Wednesday that he wants the Fed to cut rates. Meanwhile several of the president’s top economic advisors have in recent interviews and writing stopped short of calling for near-term rate cuts, as they had before the Iran war sent some prices surging and Trump installed Warsh as the new Fed chairman.
