Interesting and somewhat disheartening to read.

@tes@JackWorthNFER I’ve been teaching secondary mathematics and science for over 10 years, an MSc in Learning and Teaching from Oxford (with distinction), trained maths teachers on the PGCE at Oxford and I’m still not eligible for QTS in the UK 😂 A bit of a joke really!
Can’t quite believe it at the moment 🥰 I wish the @MarineVertsMSc was a 3 year course so I could do it on repeat. All the staff were incredible and I could not fault the course in any way 🐳 I’m so sad it’s over, but really looking forward to the future! @UniExeCEC
Wow! What a surprise and an absolute honour 😊 I feel so blessed after welcoming my beautiful son into the world and receiving this award all in one week 🥰 I had such a lovely time on the @MarineVertsMSc and wish I could do it all again! Anyone have a PhD for me? 😉 @UniExeCEC
So sad. Every inshore plankton sample I collect contains microplastic pollution. Yesterday's sample was no exception. The body of this dinoflagellate is ~ 50 µm diameter (0.05 mm). The plastic microfibre is ~ 10 µm diameter. (A human hair is ~ 70 µm.) The shocking scale of it. @Zeiss_micro
Stormy weather always leads to interesting finds on the beach. Here we have a rather decomposed dolphin (or porpoise?) with a headless seal on #FistralBeach#Newquay - all reported to CSIP and @BDMLR 🐬
Very interesting article on rabies cases in Cape Fur Seals in Cape Town, South Africa! I’m not sure what’s more petrifying to see on a surfboard - rabid seal or great white 😖

@erik_postma @UniExeCEC You’re honestly one of the most patient and dedicated lecturers I’ve ever had! It’s been an absolute pleasure learning R and stats with you on the MSc this year 😊 Absolutely world class in every way. Congrats Erik!
The same reef from a drone shot in 2023 and just a few days ago (2024) - the bleaching on the northern GBR is next level. The world is on fire (even under the water). Photos from Mar Inn
Some amazing footage of a Northern Bottlenose Whale off Greenland! I've never heard of this sort of opportunistic scavenging behaviour documented from any Beaked Whales before, and CERTAINLY never seen footage of it!
A recent study reveals a large decline in harbor porpoise populations in Danish coastal waters and the western Baltic Sea. Bycatch and pollution contribute to this decline, and researchers recommend multiple measures to mitigate threats to the population.

Key points from James:
🐳 Fin whale strandings are increasing in the UK.
🐳 The Fistral whale had suboptimal body condition, cataracts and parasitic copepods
🐳 Seawater in stomach, evidence of recent feeding
🐳 Brain samples showed encephalitis from dolphin morbillivirus
News just in from James Barnett at the @CwallWildlife Marine Strandings Conference 2024 that the stranded fin whale at Fistral died of encephalitis.
More news soon.
