The US and Iran have announced a deal to end the war and re-open the Strait of Hormuz.

This marks a potential breakthrough. It can give much needed space for deeper negotiations on Iran’s nuclear programme and other critical issues. Once implemented, the deal should also ease the global energy crisis.

I have spoken to my Iranian and Gulf counterparts in recent days, and today, EU Foreign Ministers will discuss how the EU can be closely involved in the next phase.

From economic leverage to nuclear expertise and longstanding relationships with Gulf partners, the EU stands ready to contribute to a sustainable resolution.

I welcome the agreement just announced between Washington and Tehran. I look forward to an end to this costly war and to the full restoration of freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.

I commend the tireless diplomatic efforts of all those who made this deal possible.

Weapons must now fall silent, and outstanding differences must be resolved by peaceful means, in accordance with international law. The European Union is ready to contribute to advancing a comprehensive strategy for lasting peace across the Middle East.

EU Defence Ministers are meeting today to discuss Europe’s security, from support for Ukraine to freedom of navigation in the Middle East.

Ukraine is turning the tide of the war, and we are helping them, including by advancing the unblocking of €6.6 billion through the European Peace Facility.

The Middle East does not need another escalation.
All parties must return to the negotiating table.

The Strait of Hormuz remains caught in a dangerous grey zone between war and peace.

There is now a tenuous diplomatic push to extend the ceasefire and reopen the strait.

Any first phase agreement between the U.S. and Iran must be followed by deeper talks about the nuclear stockpile, and other critical issues for regional security. The EU can contribute with technical expertise.

The EU is also helping to protect the freedom of navigation in the region, including through our operation Aspides. We have already reinforced the mission with more ships.

I spoke today with His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tariq Al Said, Sultan of Oman.

I expressed the EU's support and solidarity with Oman and all countries in the region affected by the war in Iran. We condemn all attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure in the region, without exception.

Restoring freedom of navigation and safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz is a shared priority. This is especially important given Oman’s position as a littoral state.

Diplomacy is the only sustainable way forward to solve this crisis, and Oman has a key role to play as a trusted mediator. The EU stands ready to support.
