In the Mesoamerican context, at least, human sacrifice served as a tool for both politics and social control. The political aspect was linked to the conquest of city-states and the legitimization of the victor through the sacrifice of prominent members of ruling dynasties—thereby paving the way for the installation of a native nobility sympathetic to the conqueror or a member of the conqueror's own royal family.

The social aspect was tied to the administration of justice, as lawbreakers were transformed into potential victims of ritual sacrifice. Religiously, the practice was rooted in the belief that the individual must reciprocate with the cosmos—offering something in return for the gifts received and contributing to the endless natural cycle of which they were a part.

This was a moral obligation that Mesoamerican peoples accepted with a sense of grim solemnity; yet, by the time the Spanish conquistadors arrived, the system was already showing signs of fracture, as certain kings—such as Nezahualcoyotl—questioned the practice in favor of less bloody religious expressions that bordered on a primitive form of monotheism.
