Third in the Derby. Third in the Belmont. Second in the Jim Dandy. ➡️ FIRST in the G1 Pennsylvania Derby!
BAEZA gets a well-earned breakthrough G1 win in an exceptional 3-year-old crop!
Congratulations to all connections!
BAEZA, winner of Saturday's $1,000,000 GI Pennsylvania Derby at Parx 🏆 It was the breakthrough the connections of the 3-year-old McKinzie colt had been waiting for as he secured his first career Grade I victory in a season that's seen him show up, and give it his all, each and every time.
"This was like, 'prove yourself today.' And he did. Because of all the hope we had for Baeza, all that build up and working at the barn. It was just like, 'this is it today,'" said trainer John Shirreffs.
Prior to the Pennsylvania Derby, Baeza was Grade I-placed three times this season: second in the GI Santa Anita Derby, third in the GI Kentucky Derby and second in the GI Belmont Stakes. In his previous start, he was second to Sovereignty in the GII Jim Dandy Stakes.
The half-brother to GI Kentucky Derby winner Mage and GI Belmont Stakes winner Dornoch, Baeza is the third Grade I winner produced by the remarkable mare Puca. All three of her colts are Grade I winners.
Baeza is owned by @StablesCrk LLC and Grandview Equine; bred by Grandview Equine; ridden by @HIBerrios.
