Pulled from the River Thames in 1857, the Battersea Shield is one of the finest surviving masterpieces of ancient Celtic craftsmanship in England.
Dating from around 350–50 BC, it was unlike an ordinary shield made for battle. Its thin bronze covering would have offered little protection, suggesting that it was created for ceremony, display, or as a symbol of rank and belief.
Its decoration is remarkable.
The surface is covered with flowing La Tène-style curves, raised bronze ornament and vivid red enamel. More than 2,000 years later, the design still looks bold, intricate and carefully balanced.
The shield’s discovery in the Thames has led many historians to believe that it may have been placed in the river deliberately as a votive offering. Rivers held deep spiritual importance in the ancient world, and valuable objects were sometimes surrendered to the water as gifts to gods or unseen powers.
The Battersea Shield shows that ancient England was not simply a land of warriors. It was also a world of skilled craftsmen, sacred ritual, beauty and symbolism.
A shield never intended for war. A treasure given to the river. And one of the greatest surviving echoes of England’s ancient Celtic past. 🏴

@Thebiologi27989@Tendar No, it does not work that way. Assassination is not the solution. When Putin can no longer pay social benefits, when prices skyrocket, when companies close en masse, when petrol runs out, when the army has to pull back, then Russians will eventually wake up. We're not there yet.
On my way to a concert and stopped for a quick coffee. Guy in front of me was Russian, apparently a tourist (don’t ask) and asked the barista what flavors of tea they had. I interrupted and said, “Wildberry?” The look he gave me…
@EdwardFarrelly@IonaItalia Guernsey is not even English historically but Norman. When Normandy became French again in the 1450s, the Channel islanders chose to remain English. For 200 years now, no French government has stated that the Channel islands should be French.
She is good. But the gentleman on the acoustic guitar is NOTHING short of a magician. Unbelievable!😲

One of the most surprising rooms in Villa del Casale is the one with the famous “bikini girls".
It’s a long gallery where ten young women are shown doing athletics. And yes, they really do look like they’re wearing modern bikinis, but it’s actually a Roman version of athletic wear.
What makes this scene so interesting is how normal it looks. These aren’t goddesses or mythological figures; they’re real women doing real training.
The detail is incredible!
The shading on the muscles, the folds of the fabric, the way the artist shows motion in the legs and arms. It’s one of the most famous mosaics in the entire Roman world, partly because it feels so unexpectedly contemporary.
And it’s just one small part of the villa’s massive mosaic program.
