Fernando Da Cruz Faces a tough hill. Kaizer Chiefs finished 3rd last season and the board wants Champions league qualification. The fact is that DDC won’t send us to Champions league next season.
We might have to budget for 2 seasons to come before all those players can give consistent performances. Most of those players are still trying to find their feet in the team.
The chopping and changing of coaches negatively affects them as well that’s why you still have a Ngcobo who is still trying to cement his position in the team. DDC didn’t win the league for Sundowns and surely didn’t win the league for Orlando Pirates.
Tried and Tested players need to be bought. Losing Lilepo doesn’t do justice to our frontline because he leaves with his match winning moments. Mfundo is still trying to cement his position as a starter. Mdu is the only DDC starter at our FC.
There’s plenty of work that awaits the current Technical team and the management.

Coach Fernando Da Cruz said we will be competing for everything on offer just a few days ago. Yesterday, he said the team is not ready to compete with the best teams in the league.
.........What changed?
Before the team went to Spain for pre-season, I criticised the Kaizer Chiefs management for failing to complete transfer deals on time and allow the coach to have necessary tools to lay his foundation.
No coach wants to go through pre-season without his new signings. Even if coach Da Cruz had been with the team from last season, he would still have wanted key reinforcements available for pre-season if honestly this team started preparations before the transfer window opened. The purpose of pre-season is not only to build fitness but also to integrate new profiles into the coaches game model. Instead, he was forced to work with some of the players who have repeatedly shown they cannot consistently deliver what certain roles demand.
After returning from Spain, Da Cruz was very clear about what the squad still lacked. Fixing those areas would certainly put us in a good position to compete for everything. He specifically mentioned the need to refresh the attack, identifying the LW, RW, CAM and ST as priority positions. We all saw how blunt our attack was last season, it didn't even need him to mention this. Yet nothing has meaningfully changed. We are still struggling to complete the Phili deal, and at this point, it's difficult to be confident it will even happen. Are we incapable of identifying other players with similar qualities we could be signing instead?
Meanwhile, our direct competitors have significantly strengthened their squads while we have made only 3 signings:
■ We brought in a RCB, despite already having at least 2 players capable of performing that role at the same level as the new signing, so he's not an obvious upgrade to the starting 11.
■ We signed a backup goalkeeper who also doesn't improve the starting XI and will most likely occupy a place on the bench.
■ The only signing that directly addresses a clear weakness was Adolf Mtasingwa, who arrives as an upgrade and brings a different profile to the base of midfield. So only 1 player to improve the team, then we have squad players.
What makes it even more frustrating is that we sold McCarthy, didn't take Cossa to pre-season, yet failed to strengthen the LCB position. How is this not a clear area that needs attention?
If the coach says the squad isn't ready, that assessment is fair. He is not being supported with basic things to improve the squad.
When a coach is forced to use a RB at LB, it is clearly a cry for help. It highlights a lack of suitable options rather than a tactical preference. Yet Kaizer Chiefs continue to spend almost the entire transfer window without addressing one of the most obvious weaknesses in the squad. We have NO reliable, available LB. How can the coach say the team is ready? The management keeps failing us and the club.
Can anyone remember the last time we entered a new season with only 3 signings? It paints a picture of a coach being forced to make do with whatever is available, despite several players repeatedly showing they lack the quality required to take the team forward. It was clear with the contract extensions of underperformers.
The encouraging part is that from yesterday's game, the tactical structure looks promising. We can compete. The organisation is there. The patterns are in patches. But whenever the team has to stay on the ball longer, the limitations become more obvious. You see problems in decision-making, playing the final ball, or the quality of actions from some individuals. Taking out Velebayi meant the coach has Duba, a number 9, as the only option on the right.
The missing pieces are quality players that can execute what the game model demands. Players who will challenge the ones we have and improve the team. The expectations are high on the coach, give him players to deliver.
