I'm working at a startup. Let me explain:

In startups, money is spent to avoid waste of time. IMO the worst type of waste of time is an under-motivated employee. They pretend to work, but just drag their feet and are SUPER hard to positively identify. Even worse, then you do ID such a person, kicking them out is bad for morale and can itself drag other high performance employees with them.

If I were to be hiring at a startup, I'd hire the best person for a shitton of money, because I have money. What I don't have is time.
