@edwhitfield RTD made a broad facsimile of a show he mistook as having been deliberately camp. He set up everyone that came after him to fail, including himself. RTD2 doubled down on camp, making a product for his own amusement that was openly hostile to the show's intrinsic audience.
@edwhitfield Didn't know this was Sussman's idea. He'd bring genuine pedigree. The concept is quality, with scope to improve the standing of ENT and Bakula's Archer. Always felt his performance was underrated. Hope they have the courage to formally scrub all the Kurtzman shows from canon.
@edwhitfield Have a soft spot for Alien 3. It's so grim and nasty. It's far more interesting than Aliens, but also far less satisfying. The Assembly Cut, though still flawed, improves the film considerably.
@edwhitfield Watched Fire & Ash out of a misguided sense that something that took so long to make and cost so much must have some worthwhile quality. Won't make that mistake again.
@edwhitfield Nor have I in fairness l, though her having written for and produced STD, Picard & SNW is enough for me to doubt her credentials. Mind you, I thought the DS9 S8 concept from What We Left Behind sounded dreadful and that was the product of a roomful of proven Trek talent.
@edwhitfield From discovery onwards, these shows have been exercises in navel-gazing. The classic shows always had a far broader, richer perspective. As for the sycophants, they have to toe the line or Hollywood will stop tossing them scraps. Is this how Man Utd fans feel!?
@edwhitfield My fear is they'll release a cheap, shoddy AI upscale. Considering the time that's passed since they remastered TNG, they've clearly no intention of putting in that much effort again.
@edwhitfield Starfleet Academy's writers haven't the wit to realise that catastrophic error, let alone revise or repair it. Dredging Sisko up so cack-handedly is just an exercise in vanity for them; a forced attachment to a cultural milestone. It's for their benefit, not the audience's.
@edwhitfield Making Sisko space jesus ruined the character. The finale just adds insult to injury. He was clearly chosen in Emissary, Moses-like, not predestined. A man with the right stuff to lead a people out of darkness, but a man none the less.
@edwhitfield They've portrayed Klingons as 2D barbarians since the start of Discovery. Such limited imagination for profession writers... Add to that their version of the Doctor, who seemingly developed more in 7 years than he did over the following 800. He hasn't even changed jobs!
@edwhitfield Apologies, the description was in reference to 28YL. My own reaction to it was to put me off Bone Temple but your review and word of mouth convinced me otherwise. If part 3 happens it seems likely they'll pivot and cleave closer to a rudimentary zombie film after this result.
@edwhitfield Wouldn't be surprised. He's only ever produced licenced fan fiction devoid of originality. Wish fulfilment storytelling as sophisticated as a boy playing with toys. Star Wars is in too great a mess for it to matter anyway.
@edwhitfield Considering the tone of their previous work (much of which I've liked), I wouldn't get your hopes up. Unless Paramount wants to take Trek in a goofy direction, they're an odd choice.
@edwhitfield "Taking responsibility" to these people means walking away and letting someone else deal with it when things become difficult. Why lose sleep over Christmas when you're already wealthy?
@edwhitfield The Sisko space-Jesus-who-abandoned-his-family was a HUGE mistake that holds back DS9's ending from perfection. I'm pretty forgiving of the drop-off in TNG S7, so I'm biased, but it felt like both a satisfying ending and infinite possibilities thereafter. Then we got Nemesis 😑
