Francis and her daughter Milagros joined our Second Wind family back in 2019. Francis lost her leg to cancer while she was pregnant and was told that her daughter wouldn’t survive but she did!

Our sewing team started working together after the holidays! We are excited to welcome a new member, Mercedes, onto the team. She has a basic sewing skills but would like more instruction on how to make patterns and difficult items. They started off with sewing cozy PJ’s! 💙🇭🇳

In addition, our families received grapes and apples, which are also traditional Christmas foods, as well as their monthly staples. The families are always so grateful to receive the festive food items that enhance their celebration of Christmas 💙🇭🇳

A traditional Honduran Christmas Day meal centers on tamales. Genesis's mother makes tamales, so we bought enough from her to provide for our 50 families, which gives them food for the holidays and gives her a little boost in income at the end of the year.

Honduras established Día del Niño (Children’s Day) on September 10th in 1990, following a 1954 United Nations resolution encouraging countries to set their own dates to honor children’s well-being and rights. 💙🇭🇳

Cristian helped our Second Wind children and kids in his neighborhood celebrate Children’s Day on September 10th. He impacted more than 60 children in 5 neighborhoods. There were parades of children from the schools in the neighborhoods.

Sister Adela is 91 and has two children who are alcoholics. She lives in a very small house and pays rent washing other’s clothes & collecting plastic containers to sell. She is Cristian’s role model because she exudes joy even though she has a very difficult life. 💙🇭🇳

Every month, Cristian delivers food to our 50 families. Last month was especially treacherous because the streets were flooded and he had to deliver the food to many families on foot. Even through the difficulties, the families always bring him great joy.

2nd Wind Treasurer, Theresa Mills, and I gratefully accepted a grant from the Shawnee Rotary Foundation. This foundation gave us a grant seven years ago to buy sewing machines, which we still use. The new grant will help pay the teacher salaries our new leather skills program.

Ivet is a single mother of 3 grown children and grandmother of 2. She’s an inspiration to our sewing members because she’s positive, wants to learn, and perseveres. She hopes to open her own sewing business when she graduates from our program this year. 💙🇭🇳💙

We recently added a new member to our leather program. Jose’ is 17 years old and has fought many diseases since birth, including myelomeningitis, clubfoot, and hydrocephalus. In spite of all he goes through, Jose’ is very cheerful and he dreams of one day becoming a baker.

We hope that this program will, in future years, boast of many young men and women who have learned this valuable skill of leather work, supporting their families. 💙🇭🇳

We have searched through the years for a program that would benefit men, particularly teenagers, who are prone to joining gangs when there are no other options available. I’m happy to report that we are making progress.

Two men, Pastor and Cristian were shot and paralyzed by gang leaders while they were driving a bus through gang-controlled territory. We found a teacher, Carlos, who is very skilled in making leather handbags, keychains, and shoes to teach them.

Christmas is mainly celebrated on Dec. 24 & 25, but the Honduran Christmas season starts as early as November and ends in January, and it includes festivities such as Posadas, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day, and Three Kings Day.

Scarlett, Cristian, and Marvin celebrated the joy of Christmas with our Second Wind families and children in nearby neighborhoods. This is one of our favorite times of the year! In addition to receiving their usual food, we give them rotisserie chickens, grapes, apples, and toys.

It’s our tradition to pick a person to bless by buying enough food from them that will provide them with several months of income. This year, we picked Genesis’s mother. She made tamales for all of our families!
