There are 38 million of us Californians. 27 million (71% of us) rely on the State Water Project for much of the water that sustains us. Tech workers in the Silicon Valley. Farmers in the Central Valley. And the amazing diversity and productivity that is Southern California.
Californians owe Governor Newsom a big “Thank you!” for his leadership in pushing to break through the regulatory barriers so we can complete the single most important infrastructure project for California’s water future: The Delta Conveyance Project. #DeltaConveyanceProject
March 22 is World Water Day—a reminder to appreciate water, second only to air in importance. In California, aging infrastructure and rising demand threaten our supply. Let’s invest wisely so we can keep clean water flowing—and keep something worth celebrating.
Take the cost of milk for example. A recent article in Progressive Dairy quoted a California dairy operator who said, “Water is definitely our biggest concern now.” Why? Because short water supplies drive up feed costs, which drive up milk costs.
Cadiz sits over a groundwater aquifer that contains more water than Lake Mead, and it has the extra capacity to store 1 million acre-feet of additional groundwater, taking it in wet years and holding it safely until it’s needed in dry years.
This is the week we celebrate that most mysterious of waters with Groundwater Awareness Week.
Billions and billions of acre-feet of water are under our feet – water that escapes our awareness until it comes to the surface naturally or by pump so it can be put to beneficial use.
The Federal government just allocated another $200 million to the Sites Reservoir Project, bringing Federal funding to date to $846 million. Meanwhile, California has committed $875 million in Prop 1 funds to date to the project. Way to go!
Metropolitan Water District, SoCal’s water importer and distributor, just gave us the good news!
Between 1990 and 2023, Southern Californians nearly cut their water consumption in half – from 209 gallons per person per day to just 114 gallons per person per day! Way to go SoCal!
