James "Weston" Higginbotham, a 20-year-old Auburn University student, was found dead in a mountainous area outside Kyoto after being missing in Japan for a week, his family said in a social media post. The cause of death remains under investigation, CNN reported, citing local police.

Higginbotham disappeared on May 29 during a family trip after leaving on his own following an argument with his mother. He was last seen on surveillance footage walking toward a hiking trail near the Kyoto–Shiga border. Search efforts were delayed by heavy rain linked to a typhoon until Wednesday, according to Kyoto police.
