Prolonged trauma can interfere with the development of a stable sense of self, especially when someone repeatedly had to adapt to survive their environment. They may know what they do, what others expect from them, and who they are in different relationships, yet still struggle with the deeper question: “Who am I when I’m not surviving?”
Remember when teachers used to take us to the library and librarians taught us how to conduct proper research? We’d then be assigned a topic and expected to consult at least three books before writing a report. We need to bring that back and keep tablets out of classrooms.
