Lestat had no framework for what a maker could be bc of his turning. He only knew that they were violent, brutal, and forceful - yet he never replicated that trauma with his fledglings. When seen side-by-side, the difference between his turning and that of his fledglings is devastating. They all consented, except Claudia, bc that’s where the parallels between them start.

This is why I’m not surprised that he turns to Armand for help when Nicki is spiraling - Armand may not have been a maker himself, but he had far more knowledge about vampiric life than Lestat was ever given by Magnus. He was afraid, heartbroken, and looking for guidance, and in return, Armand burned Nicki.

On a related note, not only did Lestat resist Louis’ demands to turn Claudia because it so clearly resembled his experience with Nicki, but he tried to consider how the implications of her turning would effect her in the future - a consideration he was never given.

Despite all of this, we see him try his best to be a caring maker to his fledglings. He believes that Nicki will recover (and in the books, even finds Nicki’s violin because he thinks it will help him come back to himself), he teaches Gabi and Louis how to count heartbeats and read minds, he’s proud that Claudia takes after him when it comes to hunting and tries to teach her. He tries to be everything that he wasn’t given.
