El ataque a la cadena de suministro de 🛑Ledger🛑 parece marcar un antes y un después en la autocustodia de Bitcoin.

Los atacantes consiguieron modificar dispositivos concretos interviniéndolos en algún punto de la cadena de suministro.

La empresa ensambla el dispositivo, lo entrega a una empresa subcontratada de distribución, los atacantes en algún punto intervienen y el cliente recibe un dispositivo manipulado.

Concretamente, los atacantes consiguieron introducir un componente electrónico con el que captar y retransmitir las semillas introducidas en las hardware wallets (HW) intervenidas.

Este ataque no resulta un hecho aislado, sino que acontece después de la vulneración de privacidad a la empresa distribuidora de las HW de Trezor y del error de generación de entropía que permitió a los atacantes reconstruir las semillas de múltiples usuarios de la HW de Coldcard.

Coldcard sufrió un error de diseño, Ledger un ataque en la cadena de suministro y Trezor una grave vulneración de la privacidad de sus clientes.

Las lecciones extraíbles de lo acontecido son varias.
