With no watchdog in place, companies can keep prices the same, pay less tax to the government, and quietly pocket the extra money. So even though the GST rate is lower, your final bill might not go down at all.
Here’s the problem: there used to be a law called the anti-profiteering law that forced companies to pass these GST savings directly to buyers. But this law was discontinued in 2022. Since then, no agency is actively checking prices.
For example, soap’s GST dropped from 18% to 12%. So if a soap cost ₹50 before, it should now cost about ₹47.
Phones’ GST also dropped from 18% to 12%. So a phone costing ₹12,000 before should be around ₹11,500 now.
