Museveni’s son-in-law, Odrek Rwabwogo, has publicly appealed for his aide, Matthew Bagonza, to be charged and presented before a competent court of law, if he is suspected of any wrongdoing.

Rwabwogo says he has no idea where Bagonza is being held or what charges, if any, have been preferred against him. He is calling for Bagonza’s safety, dignity, and right to due process to be respected.

But Rwabwogo is not an ordinary person. The man married President Museveni’s daughter. He shares a table with the First Family and has unfettered proximity to public coffers, only accountable to his father-in-law.

Yet even a man of such standing has been reduced to pleading before the court of public opinion, his distress laid bare for all to see.

Then there’s you and I, bereft of pedigree, proximity, or leverage. All we have in plenty are curses muttered under our breath.

We are, in every meaningful sense, doomed.
