Mbalula & Parks think we are those old people they lie to all the time in ANC NEC meetings.
If they truly don’t want to BLACKLIST students, they must exclude Educational Institutions or say; “This doesn’t apply to Student Debt.”
In the Act, wording counts more than intentions!
I feel like it’s women with children who think 4K a month from your baby daddy isn’t enough.
Because I can tell you for free it’s more than enough. The moment you add your own expenses into the kids expenses is when you’ll think it’s not enough
Subject: Objection to Credit Bureau Listing of Educational Institutions, Criminalisation of Student Debt (Gazette No. 53154)
Director-General,
I write as a young South African who is part of a generation already carrying the heavy weight of unemployment, inequality, and economic exclusion. A generation that was promised that the doors of learning shall be open to all, and education a key to success.
I hereby formally object to the draft amendments published in Government Gazette No. 53154 (13 August 2025), particularly the Amendment of Regulation 18 of the National Credit Regulations, which seeks to allow educational institutions to report unpaid student fees to credit bureaus.
This proposal will blacklist students and graduates, not for reckless borrowing, but for being too poor to afford education. This amendment is a cruel, anti-poor, and immoral attack on the youth of South Africa.
It will destroy creditworthiness, block access to housing, jobs, funding, and other essential financial opportunities. It will cement inequality in the very lives education was meant to uplift, and condemn the majority of this country to permanent poverty and economic inactivity.
South Africa’s youth unemployment rate is among the highest globally. Government Corruption, NSFAS failures and fee hikes have left thousands trapped in Debt, and this amendment will turn Student Debt into life sentences of financial punishment.
I demand the immediate withdrawal of this amendment to Regulation 18, and call on the government to, instead, support progressive solutions, like the EFF’s Student Debt Relief Bill, that offer dignity, redress, and real transformation.
Regards,
