The point of them is to convey messages, and a good story to remember them by. These were made by poets and writers, not priests. Look at hymns, or delphic maxims.

@illyriusx It seems clear to me that the Platonists want to arm pagans with good answers against Abrahamic and Atheistic opponents, and enter into dialogue about the gods, while the literalists just want to throw insults and fight strawmen.

You needn't be a Platonist to reject literalism.
