JK Rowling has just written a beautiful essay that I will link to below. This paragraph holds no punches:
“Large numbers of women who’ve never been poor, who’ve never worked the kind of job where they’d be vulnerable to predatory men and who’ve never needed a r*pe crisis centre have spent the last few years vilifying members of their own sex for fighting to retain their hard-won rights and single-sex spaces, in ways that have shocked and disgusted me. I freely confess that I feel an extra layer of abhorrence for any woman who claims to be a feminist while doing it.”
CLOSE ENCOUNTERS WASN'T SUPPOSED TO BE ABOUT RYAN GOSLING LAUGHING.
That became one of the reasons people couldn't forget it.
When SNL introduced “Close Encounters” in December 2015, the setup was straightforward: three people sit down with government investigators and describe being abducted by aliens.
Ryan Gosling and Cecily Strong describe something almost beautiful.
Then Kate McKinnon's Colleen Rafferty starts talking.
Her story is completely different.
The aliens weren't exactly friendly. They weren't exactly threatening either. They were just… extremely strange.
McKinnon played Rafferty like someone who had already accepted that nobody was going to believe her anyway.
And Gosling couldn't keep a straight face.
What makes the sketch special is that his laughter doesn't feel like an actor abandoning the scene.
It feels like a real person watching something increasingly ridiculous happen right in front of him.
The sketch had a written joke.
Then Gosling's genuine reaction created another one.
🎶📺On October 12, 1993, ‘Animaniacs’ gave us ‘Wakko’s America,’ with Wakko Warner singing all 50 U.S. states and their capitals in one speedy tune!
Did you learn the state capitals from this episode?🇺🇸
