Depression. Rescue. Evangelism.
“He drew me up from the pit of destruction,
out of the miry bog,
and set my feet upon a rock. . . .
He put a new song in my mouth,
a song of praise to our God.
Many will see and fear,
and put their trust in the Lord.” Psalm 40:2–3
“Many are the sorrows of the wicked, but steadfast love surrounds the one who trusts in the Lord.” Psalm 32:10
Whatever direction I look, omnipotent, unwavering love protects and guides.
"Make Christ your music and your song; for complaining and feeling of want does often swallow up your praises. Borrow joy and comfort from the Comforter." (Samuel Rutherford)
A few lessons on parenting little ones.
Children are born sinners who are in need of a Savior. Almost before they are able to express anything else, they are able to express their rebellion against their parents. It's important to remind yourself often that their rebellion is not first against you but against God. So don't take it personally.
Pray for your children. Pray consistently, persistently, passionately, earnestly, and constantly. Pray for their bodies and souls and lives and relationships. Pray for them with joy and with tears. Pray for them as if prayer really, truly matters. Mostly, just pray.
Anticipate that God will save them. As a Christian parent you can anticipate that God will save your children. This confidence is not in who they are, who they were born to, or on the basis of anything done by or to them. Rather, this confidence is based on the character of God and the presence of his gospel in their lives.
Make worshipping and serving at church a priority and, whenever possible, stick to one church. There are few better family disciplines than the discipline of being committed to a local church as the context for worshipping God and serving God's people. Teach this to them by example.
Generate opportunities for your children to be around adults. We are right to focus on building their friendships with other children, but we may neglect helping our children to build relationships with adults—adults who can love them, pray for them, mentor them, and help guide them as they get older.
Be humble and confident in your parenting—confident enough to not constantly change from one way of parenting to another yet humble enough to learn from others and especially to be continually challenged and corrected by God's Word.
Apart from attending church, family devotions is probably the most important discipline your family can institute. This is a discipline to begin and emphasize during the little years because life only gets more chaotic once the children get older. Now is the time to form that habit.
Extend grace to your children, not only justice. Teach them that there are consequences for disobedience and discipline them with consistency and kindness. But not every time. Also give them grace and show them mercy. Don't just tell them the gospel, but model it in your interactions with them.
There seems to be a law in this broken world that every strength is tempered with some kind of a weakness.
A pastor who is an especially powerful preacher may be an especially weak counselor; elders who are skilled and vociferous in defending the truth may fall short in grace and love; a church that takes worship services seriously may be lax when it comes to evangelism.
None of these weaknesses is defensible and none of them is okay. Yet some kind of imperfection is always inevitable on this side of glory.
What's true in churches is true in families. A husband may be extremely diligent in leading and providing, but lax in his spiritual disciplines. A wife may have penetrating insights into the Word, but be uncommitted to extending hospitality.
We ourselves have to admit that for all our virtues, they continue to be tempered by a host of vices.
This being the case, it is irrational to expect that any one church, any one pastor, any one husband or wife, friend or child, can excel in every way. And this faces us with a challenge: Can we learn to tolerate their shortcomings?
The path to joy in church, marriage, and life is to accept that there will always be imperfections, to accept that there will always be areas of disappointment—but to be willing to celebrate the strengths while tolerating the weaknesses.
While we don't need to embrace sin or apathetically accept ungodliness, we do need to accept the inevitability of faults, defects, areas that will always remain a disappointment. No individual and no community of individuals can be the complete package. It just doesn't work that way.
Just as it is the glory of a man to overlook an offense, it is the glory of a Christian to overlook a weakness—to find greater joy in what encourages than in what disappoints.
“The Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.” Acts 2:47
Saved.
Saved.
Saved.
It is a God-given word. Own it. Love it. Fill it with joyful truth.
Pick a promise of God. Trust him at every hour to keep it. Enjoy the peace.
"You keep him in perfect peace
whose mind is stayed on you,
because he trusts in you.
Trust in the Lord forever,
for the Lord God is an everlasting rock." Isaiah 26:3-4
It was reported that Al Braca climbed atop his desk in the Twin Towers and said, "I'm going to Heaven, who's going with me." He then proclaimed the Gospel to his coworkers. Al's body was one of the very few that was found intact in the rubble.
Al's office was above where the first jet crashed - he was not getting out. Those who were trapped with Al and heard the Gospel message, and received Jesus as their Lord and Savior were blessed in that they were afforded this last chance. Many were not so fortunate. Therein lies a lesson: no one is promised a ‘last chance’. Today is the day of YOUR salvation; receive Jesus as your Lord and Savior.
"The Lord is thy keeper: the Lord is thy shade upon thy right hand The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul. The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.” (Psalm 121:5-8)

But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity.
