Lots of people saying FAFO. Perhaps, however it will be difficult to claim self-defense in court as this video shows mostly evidence of an assault taking place.
Dura lex sed lex, even if you don't agree with it.
When you find yourself in an escalating situation, evade and escape is usually the best solution. But it isn't always possible. Sometimes the only thing protecting you are your physical skills.
Effective self-defense training means it is not either/or. It's both.
Regardless of the context, the real violence starts when the lady gets in the black man's face and invades his personal space while yelling aggressively. When he pushes her back, she strikes first.
I've commented many times that it is easy to start a fight but almost impossible to predict when it will stop or how far it will go. This video illustrates that perfectly. A key question then becomes: does she think this outcome was worth whatever she gained from slapping him in the face?
The point is not who is to blame, because he could have walked away before she came this close. The point is that this dynamic is entirely predictable, yet has unpredictable consequences that can go all the way up to somebody losing his or her life.
"Teen-takeover" is a euphemism for "riot." Eventually, citizens will have had enough and either take action themselves or elect politicians who will.
Historically, this always ends in tears...
Just look at how many black teens are in this video just running rampant like wild animals breaking things and attacking anything and anyone in their path.
Black people thrive in chaos
White people don't
How do we fix this problem that seems to be getting worse by the day.
This guy got tossed from the nightclub in a fashion he takes exception to.
Pants damn near yanked down, he gets up calling these bouncers out..
Watch corn fed white boy take care of the light work!!
Police arrived right on time, and get a curbside pick up..
Later cuz!! 🫵😎
The number one error people make in such a situation is staying in striking range. Pink hat guy indeed makes it worse by advancing, invading the space of the other guy. In this context, that virtually guarantees he will take a swing.
Managing escalating conflicts is a skill too many have to learn the hard way.
It is easy to predict when violence starts, but hard to do so when it will stop or how far it will go.
This one here is a bad end point: those punches do a lot of damage. Potentially fatal or with lifelong injuries as a result.
It is worth considring if such an outcome is worth whatever started this...
That kick is called an "attitude adjuster":
The big guy was down but not out. He looked like he would get up and resume fighting. The smaller man "adjusted" that attitude instantly with a brutal kick to the head.
There is a reason such kicks are banned from modern MMA: they can be devastating and cause permanent injury or worse...
In many places, it is difficult to claim legal self-defense should you use them, if it is recorded as is here, and you are taken to court for your actions.
Caveat emptor...
Bystander intervention can definitely work, but it is a skill that needs to be trained, grounded in realistic information and an understanding of the dynamics involved.
If you want to learn how to do this effectively, I made a 90min. course on this topic a while ago:

There is a tremendous amount of ignorance when it comes to knife vs. firearm. Too many people get their information on this topic from movies and TV shows that are usually miles away from reality.

Mocking armchair critics who have probably never touched a gun, let alone faced a crazed demon, asking “Why not tase him / shoot him in the leg / talk to him?” or some similar nonsense.
FACT: He was tased and shot multiple times.
Can't pin my posts.
Sharing pictures is a mess. Have to wade through a bunch of nonsense instead of just giving me the gallery on my device.

Being aware of your environment and all potential dangers is a skill better not neglected. If you let your emotions or ego control your tactics, such a mistake is quickly made and can lead to an educational beatdown as seen here.
Such a lesson only stops when the teachers feel like stopping, not when the student can't take it anymore and wants it to end.
There are many lessons to be learned from this incident, but I'll stick to this:
- Competition MMA and BJJ can give you excellent skills, many of which transfer to self-defense. But not all of them. No idea if this man is trained, but he seems to default to the back take and attempts some sort of RNC. The footage is limited; a different camera angle or the full video would be helpful, but that's what we can see now.
- MMA and BJJ do not take into account certain factors that are a reality in self-defense. The potential presence of weapons is one of them. In this case, you can clearly see the man opening his folding knife. Had the manager's wife not intervened, he more than likely would have been cut and stabbed. It was clear he was unable to control the shoplifter's hands to stop him.
- Taking the back often works and is an effective tactic. However, it makes it difficult to prevent this kind of escalation to weapons. Which means that if you are going for an RNC or any other submission, it needs to incapacitate the attacker in seconds. In a self-defense situation like this one, you're betting your life on your ability to pull that off...
- Had the shoplifter carried a fixed blade, the wife would likely have been too late to stop him from hurting her husband.
- Another incident almost ended in disaster when MMA champ GuyMezger got in a street confrontation and didn't realize the other guy had pulled a knife...

Middle aged Finnish grocery store manager take down a shoplifter when the shoplifter pulls a knife. Luckily the managers wife was working the same shift and helped him disarm the shoplifter and hold him down until the police came.
