Sharaabi remains a very notable film in @SrBachchan’s work, simply because he literally spent a major portion of the film portraying a person who was drunk. And did so convincingly. Jaya Bachchan later said in an interview that she was genuinely surprised at the fact that he was so consistent in his performance - normally actors tend to exaggerate or show different levels.
Interestingly, Amitabh Bachchan’s ability to play drunk characters convincingly (in spite of not being a heavy drinker himself) came to the fore in a scene in Namak Haram where he and Rajesh Khanna did the most drunk-friends thing ever - kept trying to drop each other home.
The drunken sequence became a bit of an Amitabh trademark although it was a testament to his ability that he was able to add a comic element to it (Amar Akbar Anthony) as well as pathos (Shakti). Interestingly one of his last memorable drunken performances came in Kohram, where he and Nana Patekar spent a good few minutes bidding each other good bye. Just like he and Rajesh Khanna had more than 25 years ago.
I remember seeing Amitabh Bachchan playing a drunk in Do Anjaane and whispering to mum in the cinema hall “Isn’t Papa exactly like that.”
He could act.
