Tiny values, high voltage, extreme durability.
Inside: rolled metal foils + oil-impregnated paper, sealed in glass to survive anything the circuit could throw at them.

This powder (usually charcoal) is part of a vacuum regulator in an bi-anodic X-ray tube. Used to release gas when heated. It lowered the vacuum level to keep the tube functional. (The vacuum increased because gas was absorbed by the glass during operation).

A good engineer knows how it works. A great one knows why it doesn’t work.
Engineers don’t look for easy ways — they automate the difficult ones.
