Why do we call postgraduate medical training "residency"?
The story goes back to 1889 when Dr. William Halstead, Head of the Department of Surgery at John Hopkins Hospital, established a rigorous program for trainee doctors. He claimed that doctors must ‘live’ in the hospital to become proficient, leading to the term ‘resident doctors’. Dr. Halstead himself rarely slept but always seemed energetic and fresh, positioning himself as a role model.
Fun fact: It was later discovered that Dr. Halstead was addicted to cocaine, a stimulant that likely contributed to his apparent superhuman abilities.
Sadly, even today, resident doctors are often expected to display superhuman skills across countries. Basic needs like proper sleep, regular meals, and occasional breaks are often frowned upon and dismissed as laziness.
Tired and sleep-derived resident doctors are more likely to make medical errors, have needle stick injuries and motor vehicle accidents while going back from the hospitals.
Sadly, no one cares.

With all due respect sir,
The believer of Jesus Christ and Hell shouldn’t be in the same sentence.
The ticket to Heaven is believing the Gospel of Jesus Christ which the power of God unto salvation.
What sends people to Hell is unbelief in Jesus and what he did.
We were all on the ward, post rounds, finishing procedures and stuff, it suddenly started to rain, korle bu, surgical ward 5th floor.
The ward started flooding right before our eyes. We rushed to close the window, they wouldn’t budge.
I am protesting because just like @ghanadoctor233 I can’t afford to pay for healthcare and my workplace does not cover for me.
I pray daily for good health because i can’t afford to fall sick.

Because if not for medical students present with their phone flashlights at the time, the surgeons would’ve been stuck since power wasn’t returning.

Ghana has lost yet another historic & cultural landmark due to neglect. The ancient mud mosque at Bole has collapsed. Torrential rains are being blamed but 5 years ago I visited it & wrote an article documenting visible termite infestation in its rafters. https://t.co/nscCHoBEOS
After the Nazis invaded the Netherlands, a Dutch watchmaker named Cornelia Arnolda Johanna and her family built a secret room in their home to protect Jews until they could be transported to safety. In just four years, the ten Boom family helped rescue over 800 people.
Though ten Boom was arrested by the Nazis in 1944 — and sent to Ravensbrück concentration camp, a concentration camp built specifically for women — she narrowly avoided being sent to the gas chambers and was released before World War II ended.
Years later in 1971, she published a book about her experiences called "The Hiding Place" and began traveling all over the world to give lectures on the power of forgiveness. But then at one of her talks, a former Nazi guard who worked at the same camp that she was detained in approached her to ask for her forgiveness. And she decided to give it to him.
Her most famous book, The Hiding Place, is a biography that recounts the story of her family's efforts and how she found and shared hope in God while she was imprisoned at the concentration camp.
What an exciting experience we have had this morning!
