The IOC has spent years pretending that "neutral" status somehow separates russian athletes from the regime waging the largest war in Europe since World War II. Now, after restoring the russian Olympic Committee, it is facing consequences.

Estonia is calling on the European Commission to suspend EU funding to the IOC, arguing that sport must never become a backdoor for normalizing aggression. That's exactly right. Organizations that choose appeasement over principle should not expect European taxpayers to finance their hypocrisy.

Just like the AC debate, this whole red card mess really shows differences between the American & European mindset.

Americans are a solutions-oriented people. If something’s stupid or unfair, we fix it. Too hot? Install an AC. Bogus red card? Repeal it.

Europeans, on the other hand, will spend three hours bitching & whining, explaining why the stupid rule actually makes sense, why changing it would violate 200 years of tradition, and why you’re the problem for wanting to fix it.

This a civilizational difference.

🚨 𝗕𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗞𝗜𝗡𝗚: The Royal Belgian Football Association has released a statement in regard to Folarin Balogun being able to play against them.

"The Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA) is astonished by FIFA's decision to declare suspended United States player Folarin Balogun eligible to play in the USA–Belgium match on Monday, 6 July at 5:00 p.m. (Seattle time)."

"FIFA bases its decision on Article 27 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code. This provision states that the FIFA Disciplinary Committee may decide to suspend the enforcement of a previously imposed disciplinary sanction."

"However, Article 66.4 of the same FIFA Disciplinary Code clearly provides that a red card (sending-off) automatically results in a suspension for the team's next match, as has been the case for all previous red cards issued during this FIFA World Cup."

"Furthermore, and irrespective of the above, the decision is in direct contradiction with the provisions of the FIFA World Cup 2026 Competition Regulations, as set out in Article 10.5:

"If a player or team official is sent off as a result of a direct or indirect red card (second caution), they will automatically be suspended from their team's subsequent match. In addition, further sanctions may be imposed."

Über 50 britische Abgeordnete fordern die Entfernung von "Mascha und der Bär" aus Netflix und ITVX.

Ukraines Zentrum zur Bekämpfung von Desinformation nennt die Serie ein Instrument russischer Soft Power, Estlands Außenminister spricht von militaristischer Botschaft im Kinderprogramm.

Die Serie läuft längst auch in Deutschland, Frankreich, Italien und Polen.

Reaktion aus Brüssel: keine.
Reaktion aus Berlin, Paris oder Rom: keine.

Der Grund liegt im System selbst. Medienaufsicht ist in der EU Ländersache, Streaming-Plattformen werden nur am europäischen Sitzland reguliert – bei Netflix also in den Niederlanden. Ohne gemeinsame Initiative bleibt jedes Land einzeln zuständig und genau deshalb bleibt am Ende niemand zuständig.

Während London handelt, blockiert sich Europa selbst mit seiner eigenen Zuständigkeitsstruktur.

Für so einen Fall gibt es in der EU mehrere mögliche Zuständigkeiten:
EU-Ebene:

Europäische Kommission (Generaldirektion CONNECT) – zuständig für den Digital Services Act und die AVMD-Richtlinie (Audiovisuelle Mediendienste-Richtlinie), die auch Desinformation und schädliche Inhalte für Minderjährige regelt

East StratCom Task Force des Europäischen Auswärtigen Dienstes (EAD) – speziell für die Analyse russischer Desinformation zuständig, aber ohne Sanktionsbefugnis gegenüber einzelnen Sendungen

Nationale Ebene (entscheidender als EU):
Rundfunk- und Medienaufsicht liegt in der EU größtenteils bei den Mitgliedstaaten selbst.
In Deutschland wären das die Landesmedienanstalten (via Medienstaatsvertrag), in Frankreich die ARCOM, in Italien die AGCOM.

Das eigentliche Problem: Netflix und Streaming-Anbieter fallen unter das "Sitzlandprinzip" der AVMD-Richtlinie – reguliert wird dort, wo die Plattform ihren europäischen Hauptsitz hat (bei Netflix z.B. Niederlande), nicht in jedem einzelnen Land, in dem sie ausstrahlt. Das macht ein koordiniertes EU-weites Vorgehen deutlich komplizierter als Großbritanniens nationalen Alleingang – dort kann Ofcom direkt eingreifen, in der EU bräuchte es entweder eine niederländische Entscheidung oder eine EU-weite Regulierungsinitiative.

Wie viel Soft Power passt eigentlich durch ein Regulierungsvakuum, das 27 Staaten gemeinsam offenlassen?
