President Donald Trump nominated Republican judge Andrew Benson as U.S. Attorney for the District of Maine. Benson, a low-profile LePage appointee, was previously a tough homicide prosecutor.

Benson inherits an office weakened by former Biden appointee Darcie McElwee, who was rewarded with a judgeship by Janet Mills immediately after she resigned. Multiple law enforcement officers have told me McElwee blocked cocaine prosecutions, even for kilo-level trafficking, and applied left-wing politics, including racial litmus tests, to prosecutions. Politics trumped law, order, and safety.

Benson, in many ways a compromise nominee between the hard MAGA right and the more establishment GOP brand, should be easily confirmed. Once in office, expect a swift series of organized crime indictments, similar to Massachusetts under Leah Foley. Federal authorities know who and where the bad guys are. Benson will inherit superb org charts for several transnational DTOs. The good guys at the USAO, the FBI, the DEA, and federal law enforcement have just been doing waiting for someone with the courage to act.
