A poisonous plant got a FSSAI licence number, got packed in a food-grade pouch, sat in a warehouse, and went up on three of the biggest grocery platforms in the country as something you could add to your cart.

The story here is just so crazy.

Datura grows wild across India. Most of us have walked past it. It has a place in Shiva worship, which is why it gets sold in the first place.

But the plant contains three tropane alkaloids, atropine, hyoscyamine and scopolamine.

If you eat it, symptoms start within about half an hour to an hour. Pupils blow open, mouth goes bone dry, heart races, and then confusion, agitation and hallucinations set in.

Severe cases go to seizures, coma and death. The effects last a day or two and sometimes longer.

The part that makes datura genuinely dangerous is that its strength swings wildly. Toxin levels can vary about five times from plant to plant depending on the age of the plant, the soil it grew in and that season's weather.

There is no safe dose because there is no consistent dose. Two identical looking fruits can behave completely differently.

Now, the Karnataka's food safety department found datura fruits and seeds listed as food on e-commerce platforms.

Packets in warehouses carrying FSSAI licence or registration numbers, being offered for sale online.

Representatives of the three companies appeared before the authority.

Amazon submitted no response. Instamart asked for more time to produce documents. BigBasket said it had stopped selling and would fix the labelling to say "Not for human consumption" in future.

The regulator called all three responses unsatisfactory and suspended the food licences until further orders. Compliance reports are required before anything gets restored.

We know how this plays out when datura reaches a food chain by accident. In Uganda in 2019, a batch of fortified corn-soy relief food got contaminated with jimsonweed, which is the same plant.

293 people fell ill and five died. Investigators later found atropine and scopolamine in the samples.

Now the bigger question this case actually opens.

For years, marketplaces have argued they are noticeboards. A seller lists, a buyer buys, the platform just connects them. Karnataka has gone at that argument from a different direction.

It did not chase the small seller. It pulled the platform's own food licence. If a listing sits on your platform under your FSSAI number, the food is yours.

It is also worth noting how food safety law got written everywhere else and why we must applaud what has happened here.

Bradford, England, 1858.

A sweet maker sent someone to buy plaster of Paris to bulk out peppermint humbugs, a normal practice then. The druggist's assistant handed over arsenic by mistake. About twenty people died and over two hundred fell ill.

Britain passed the Adulteration of Food and Drink Act in 1860 and the Sale of Food and Drugs Act in 1875, which became the foundation of modern food law.

United States, 1906.

Upton Sinclair published The Jungle about the Chicago meatpacking yards. Within months Congress passed the Pure Food and Drug Act and the Meat Inspection Act.

United States again, 1937.

A company dissolved a sulfa drug in diethylene glycol, which is essentially antifreeze, because it tasted sweet. Over a hundred people died, many of them children.

There was no law at the time requiring a company to prove a product was safe before selling it. The 1938 Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act followed, and that is the law that built the modern FDA.

China, 2008.

Melamine was added to milk to fake higher protein readings in tests. Around 300,000 infants were affected and six died. China rewrote its entire Food Safety Law the following year.

India, 1998.

Mustard oil in Delhi was adulterated with argemone oil. Around sixty people died in the dropsy epidemic and thousands fell ill.

India, 2013.

Twenty three children died in Chhapra, Bihar, after a midday meal cooked in oil that had been stored in a used pesticide container.

Almost every food safety law in history is written in the past tense.

Somebody dies, the country gets angry, the rules change.

Karnataka has acted here with no body count.

No hospital ward, no funeral, no headline about children. Just an inspection, an order, and three licences pulled.

It is rare to see this kind of enforcement and it usually gets no credit precisely because nothing happened.

However, the real gap here is upstream. Somebody issued an FSSAI registration for this. Somebody's listing approval process let it through a food category.

Neither of those is fixed by suspending a licence for a few weeks.

The next step must be to find how this landed in food pouches, and catch hold.
