#OnThisDay 1798 General Humbert's mixed French & Irish force marched on Castlebar. Outnumbered 3:1 and withstanding artillery fire, Humbert's men defeated the Crown forces. The Crown fled to Tuam, some 30 miles away. This is known as the Races of Castlebar.
