I HAD TO KNEEL DOWN AND KISS MY EMPLOYER'S FEET THREE TIMES BEFORE I COULD COME HOME
April 2, 2017 – Upon arriving from Kuwait where she works as a domestic helper, Luzviminda Siapo broke down in her brother’s arms at the airport.
Just a few days back, her 19-year-old son Raymart was abducted and shot dead in Navotas. A day before Raymart was killed, he got into a heated argument with a neighbor, who later went to the barangay to accuse him of peddling marijuana. The following night, 14 armed men in motorcycles came and kidnapped Raymart. They brought him to a dark lot, where witnesses heard the men taunting Raymart to get off the motorcycle, "Run! Run!", they said. But he couldn't even if he wanted to – he was club footed. They shot him twice in the head.
From the airport, Luzviminda went straight to the barangay hall to demand answers. “This is the reason why my son was murdered, sir, tell me what to do. Tell me! Because I had to kneel down and kiss my employer’s feet three times before I could come home. Give me an answer, please,” she said as she points at the allegations against her son written in the village logbook.
“All it took was a false accusation for these people to murder my son. They did not bother to investigate, they did not bother to verify. They just killed him.”
Arriving home, she walked slowly toward her son's coffin. She hugged it, and broke down once more.
"Mama's home."
