All of the intense behavior we were seeing from the #WillowFire in Colorado today was happening above 2 miles in elevation, with the most recent perimeter showing it burning up to 11,900’. #cowx
The team at CWT has been working around the clock on our website this past week. There are tons of new features, with many more coming. Our primary focus in this latest batch of updates has been on the weather side. The site now features NEXRAD L2 radar data, address-specific data (including, but not limited to, hourly weather outlooks and nearby observations). CWT now also has its own custom HRRR Cross-Sections and weather products. This is only the beginning for us; the site is constantly evolving, so stay tuned! #CAwx #Weather
The #PocketFire is staying hot into the night, with critically strong winds taking aim at Kachina Village later. I’m going to be honest, the community does not look well prepared for a fire. There’s a lot of distance to cover though, so I’m holding on to hope. #azwx
The U.S. Wildland Fire Service is devastated to share that three wildland firefighters lost their lives on Saturday, June 27, as part of an interagency response to the Knowles and Gore fires along the Colorado-Utah border. Additionally, two crew members were injured in the line of duty and have been transported to a hospital.
Our immediate focus is on supporting their families, friends, and fellow crewmates during this incredibly difficult time.
The U.S. Wildland Fire Service stands united with the USDA Forest Service in grief and in our unwavering support for the loved ones left behind. Their bravery, dedication, and sacrifice will never be forgotten.
Additional details will be shared as they are able to be released.
NOAA is now highlighting a large region of "Extremely Critical" fire weather conditions Fri near the heart of the severe-to-extreme drought region across interior West, w/expansion into Sat-Sun likely. While existing fires have quieted down today, that lull will be short-lived.
Eagle Point in Utah is likely being impacted by the #CottonwoodFire now, with nearby weather stations spiking to high temperatures as the fire closes in. Embers appear to be raining down on the last update of the traffic camera on the south side of the ski area. #utwx
The #CottonwoodFire is currently being extremely intense with a lot of strong turbulence present in the updraft core as seen on radar. The total satellite FRP is ~56 GW which is the highest I've seen it on a US wildfire this year so far. #utwx#utfire
