In May 1998, “Saturday Night Live” star and voice actor Phil Hartman went to sleep inside his home in California.

He never woke up.

Late that night, after an argument, his wife, Brynn, walked into their bedroom and shot him three times while he slept. Their two young children were asleep down the hall.

She then drove to a friend’s house and told him what she had done. He did not believe her. So she brought him home and showed him the body.

The friend immediately called 911. As police arrived and led the children out of the house, Brynn locked herself in the bedroom with her husband’s body and shot herself.

At the time of his death, Phil had just been cast to voice a major character in the upcoming animated series “Futurama.” He never got the chance to record a single line.

Billy West, the actor who took over the role, later said the show’s main character was given his first name in Phil’s honor.

That character is Philip J. Fry.
