@neiltyson Well, I think the idea of the 1st January is indeed based on an astronomically significant event, because the Julian calendar (which the Gregorian is based on) set that day in the year 45 BC as the darkest day of the year, i.e. the first new moon after winter solstice.

@johnloeber@neiltyson Caesar introduced the Julian Calendar in such a way that the 1st day of the year should be the darkest day of the year. Therefore 1st January of 45 BC was set to be the first new moon after winter solstice.
