Sixty-three years ago today, Addie Mae Collins, Denise McNair, Carole Robertson, and Cynthia Wesley were murdered in the bombing of Birmingham’s 16th Street Baptist Church.
They were children. Their lives were stolen by racial hatred and terrorism.
Remember their names. Honor their lives. And continue the work of confronting the hatred and dehumanization that made their murders possible.

Alex Pretti's family on how they found out about his death.
"It was all over the news. We watched it. I was like that's our son. That's Alex and they killed him. No one called us. Watching our son shot 10 times trying to help someone. And being beaten, sprayed with tear gas.
My shock is that he was murdered and no one has given us the complete truth or anyone has been held accountable and it's been seven months. There was more effort in vilifying him than pursuing justice."
Nearly two weeks without power is not simply an inconvenience. It means spoiled food, disrupted businesses, lost communication, unbearable heat, and families wondering when help will finally come.
What is happening in Gary, Indiana, raises a deeper question about whose communities are treated with urgency. Black communities have too often been expected to endure neglect, absorb the consequences, and keep surviving.
No community should have to prove that its families are worthy of immediate care.
Our communities deserve more than survival. Black communities deserve to be valued.
