Dear Sermeiss colleagues. I’m sorry to announce that our October 2024 conference has been cancelled. The conference center has rebounded from the hurricane, but much of the region (and many of the roads) have not. So the board reluctantly made the decision to cancel this year.

I've just finished the final revisions of my book on the Syrian conflict. This book answers two key questions: Why have Jihadis, or groups overlapping with them, dominate the conflict? Second, why have some Jihadi groups rejected global jihad and adopted a more pragmatic approach over time, particularly after marginalising non-Jihadis?
My new book builds upon a decade-long research, including numerous trips to northwest Syria since 2019 and multiple interviews with leaders and commanders of Syrian armed opposition groups, including Abu Muhammad al-Jolani himself. I focus primarily on Ahrar al-Sham, and to some extent Jabhat al-Nusra, though the book also generally covers armed groups' mobilisation, alliance systems, relations to foreign states, and governance.
It will be out by Summer in open access (free access online), and in paperback (https://t.co/9iHB2pujhS)
