The world of football has been rocked by an unprecedented scandal. Europe has drawn a line in the sand. Today, all 55 UEFA national associations unanimously declared at an emergency meeting that if Gianni Infantino sells a stake in the FIFA World Cup to private investors, European national teams will boycott the World Cup and all FIFA competitions.

Right after the World Cup, Infantino decided to cash in on the biggest sporting event on the planet by turning it into an investment asset. FIFA is creating a new entity called FIFA Forward Enterprise, valued at $20 billion. The plan is to sell up to a 20% stake to private investors and raise $4.2 billion. The lead investor is expected to be Thrive Eternal, led by Joshua Kushner, the younger brother of Donald Trump’s son-in-law. J.P. Morgan is overseeing the process. The heads of the continental confederations learned about it from newspaper reports. There were no prior consultations. No discussion. Complete secrecy.

Infantino insists that FIFA will retain control and that the money will be used to develop football. In reality, it looks very different. Member associations are being promised generous payments—$20 million or more—if they support the plan. Oppose it, and you risk being left without funding. UEFA has openly described this as governance through intimidation and an act of coercion unworthy of an organization entrusted with safeguarding world football.

The criticism of Infantino is fundamental. He has turned FIFA into a personal tool for enrichment. Secret negotiations with investors linked to Trump’s inner circle, complete disregard for Europe’s football federations, and an attempt to force the decision through financial pressure and an accelerated timeline—this is not “football development.” It is the sale of a legacy built by generations of players, coaches, and supporters.

UEFA responded with a clear and uncompromising message:

“This crosses a line that football’s governing institutions should never cross. The soul and governance of football are not assets to be traded—especially with zero transparency over who stands to profit financially. Football does not belong to FIFA, and FIFA has no right to sell it. The FIFA World Cup cannot be treated as an investment product. It is one of football’s greatest sporting legacies. No part of it should be handed over to private investors. The World Cup is not for sale.”

For the proposal to pass, it must receive the support of a majority of FIFA’s 211 member associations, along with approval from the FIFA Council. The situation is extremely tense and has become one of the most serious confrontations between UEFA and FIFA in recent years.

If Infantino’s plan succeeds, world football will change forever. Europe’s football associations say they are prepared to walk away. And this would not be blackmail. It would be their last attempt to stop the game from being turned into an investment vehicle for a privileged few.

Football belongs to those who play it, coach it, and watch it—not to Infantino, not to J.P. Morgan, and certainly not to Trump’s relatives.

Trump gebruikt Oekraine en Zelenskyy om de midterms te winnen. 70% van de Amerikanen is namelijk pro-Oekraine. Slechts 10% is pro-Rusland.
