June 8, 1776 — Collapse at Trois-Rivières, Discipline Under Washington! In the early morning hours of June 8, 1776, American troops under General William Thompson launched a surprise attack on the British post at Trois-Rivières, along the St. Lawrence River. The plan quickly fell apart.

Navigating unfamiliar terrain by night, the Americans became bogged down in swampland. By the time they reached open ground, British forces—now reinforced with regulars, Hessians, and naval support—were fully alert and well-positioned. Outnumbered and disoriented, the American force broke. More than 200 were captured, including Thompson himself.

This final blow sealed the failure of the American invasion of Canada—a campaign plagued by disease, bad intelligence, fractured command, and poor planning. The army had just lost its overall commander, General John Thomas, to smallpox on June 2, and leadership had passed hastily to Thompson.

The contrast with General George Washington’s army at Boston was stark. During the long siege of Boston, Washington had faced similar challenges—disease, supply shortages, green troops—but had imposed order, patience, and professionalism. He created a system for sanitation and medical care, improved intelligence gathering, and enforced military discipline from the top down. But more than that, he issued strict orders forbidding looting or abuse of civilians. His soldiers were to respect the persons and property of all inhabitants, Patriot or not.

Washington understood that military victory would mean little without moral legitimacy. Where the northern army stumbled through chaos and alienated locals in Canada, Washington’s command presented itself as a disciplined, just, and organized force—worthy of the cause it served.

Trois-Rivières was not just a defeat on the battlefield—it was a failure of structure, planning, and leadership. In Boston, Washington had shown a different way. And that’s the way it was on June 8, 1776.

On May 28, Brett Scrogham, a recent White Indiana University (IU Indianapolis / Kelley School of Business) graduate, was sitting in his car in the Plaza Park parking garage downtown near the Indiana Convention Center.

He was there to meet his parents for a baseball game. 💔

A 14-year-old black thug approached, attempted to rob him, and shot him in the head.

Brett was rushed to the hospital and died from his injuries.

I don’t have a photo of the killer to show you… he’s a “teen” and they won’t release the photo or name.

He’s too young for a mug shot and his name being released, but old enough to execute a promising young White man who was simply waiting for his parents to watch a baseball game.
