HARVARD’S ELIOT HOUSE TO HAVE KOSHER KITCHEN: Author Erich Segal used Harvard’s Eliot House as the apotheosis of elite Brahmin life at Harvard. Notables such as George Plimpton ‘48, Benjamin Crowninshield Bradlee ‘43, and Archibald Cox ‘34 all resided there. Now this residence on the Charles will be Harvard’s first to gain a kosher kitchen thanks to the efforts of Stuart Zimmer ‘91. The gesture is notable at a time when the climate for Jews at Harvard is a subject of national headlines.
“[I]n establishing kosher dining at Eliot House, we hope to ensure that every Jewish student feels genuinely welcomed and at home on campus; that this place becomes a hub of tradition, belonging, and pride for years to come,” Zimmer stated in “The Harvard Gazette.” (The Science Center will also be named for Zimmer’s father, Alan z”l, as part of the gift.) https://t.co/wgTbg5LanW
For anyone who’s ever faced a personal challenge, it doesn’t get much better than the 'Six Minutes' speech in VISION QUEST. This scene wasn’t in the 1979 novel by Terry Davis. Elmo's monologue was written specifically for the film by screenwriter Darryl Ponicsan (THE LAST DETAIL, TAPS). Actor J. C. Quinn absolutely knocks it out of the park here.
If you’d like to support the @FMJDiary project, you can bid on an original poster below. I signed and inscribed it with Elmo’s iconic line: “It ain't the six minutes... it's what happens in that six minutes.”

I’ve bumped into David Josselyn a couple of times in Natick. I’ve seen him at the Natick Sons and Daughters of Italy pasta dinner and at my favorite Dunkin’ on West Central Street, but I never knew what kind of memories he had inside of him. As today’s Memorial Day keynote speaker, Josselyn followed Representative David Linsky and told his story of graduating from Natick High School, serving in Vietnam, and then coming home and being part of the Army’s burial detachment on the West Coast. That final role brought him in contact with families grieving their loved ones killed in action on a weekly and even daily basis. He also spoke of the pain of losing one of his high school classmates in Vietnam. He’s a neighborhood person, a Natick person, and, a caring person — as I heard say several times today, “we’re all in this together.” #MemorialDay

@shagbark_hick Wilkes-Barre-Kingston, PA has low home prices and walkability. Not as quirky as the Berkshires, but plenty of parishes (Slavic and Irish.)
@shagbark_hick North Adams or Pittsfield, MA? Even though it’s a rural area overall, the downtowns are walkable and somewhat dense. Plus that area has BRTA bus service so you can move up and down Route 8. You can find houses in the 200k-range. Property tax is capped. https://t.co/bmA596rgEg
