The Untrained Eye

Work in a technical field for any length of time and it’s incredible how quickly you normalise weird looking things.

You can look over a bunch of radically different systems and you start to recognise all the subsystems and components just as easily as other people recognise the animals in a zoo.

“Pump”, “valve”, “gauge”, “motor”, “shaft”, “bearing”, “seal”, “housing”, “fixing”.

What the majority of people probably don’t understand is that this is actually really very accessible.

It doesn’t take many hours of learning at all (maybe 5-6 hours?), and you can recognise every component, in every engine bay, of every car.

And if you’re really curious, you just keep learning, and eventually the whole world around you starts to become as familiar and as recognisable to you as your childhood bedroom was.

Eventually you start to get an even more sophisticated eye.

You start to recognise design styles and design preferences. You start to recognise equipment by its nationality and eventually by the manufacturer and you might even start to recognise the work of individual inventors / designers in much the same way an art historian does.

Engineering is the highest form of art, and for the discerning, the whole world is a gallery.
