The West could help put a stop this barbaric practice by making foreign aid contingent upon the Somali government’s making FGM illegal and actively working to stop it. It would cost us absolutely nothing, and it would do so much to help Somali girls, but we won’t do it because no one actually cares about these girls. If 99% of Somali boys were having their penises chopped off, you can bet that the world would do more than just shrug it off.
