PATROL DEPUTIES OF THE MONTH NAMED FOR JANUARY 2026
SCSO Patrol Services recognizes deputies who have distinguished themselves in their daily duties with the Deputy of the Month award. On February 25 at the Sheriff’s Office substation in Arlington, Deputy Edward Owens and Deputy Israel Muhammad were honored as Deputies of the Month for January 2026 in recognition of their exceptional performance in saving victims from drowning.
On January 30, 2026, Deputies Owens and Muhammad responded to a call of a possible drowning at a pond at the Southland Lakes Apartments. Upon arrival, Deputy Muhammad located a 12-year-old child who had fallen into a pond located within the apartment complex. The child was in immediate danger of drowning. Acting decisively, Deputy Muhammad utilized an available rope and, with the assistance of civilians on scene, successfully pulled the child from the water. The child was transported to the hospital in stable condition. Deputy Muhammad’s actions were directly responsible for removing the child from a life-threatening situation, thereby saving a human life.
During the same incident, Deputy Owens located a 7-year-old child submerged in the pond and unresponsive. Without hesitation and with complete disregard for his own personal safety, Deputy Owens entered the water and removed the child. Once the child was brought to safety, Deputy Owens immediately initiated life-saving CPR. Shelby County Fire paramedics took over and transported him to the hospital in critical condition. A treating physician stated that had the child not received the high-quality CPR administered by Deputy Owens, the child likely would not have survived. Deputy Owens’ actions were critical, direct, and life-preserving.
The actions of Deputies Owens and Muhammad are credited with saving their lives through immediate, decisive, and courageous actions. Their conduct reflects the highest standards of professionalism, bravery, and dedication to the preservation of life. Their selfless service, courage, and commitment to protecting life exemplify the values of this organization and set an outstanding example for all personnel.
Deputy Owens has served with @ShelbyTNSheriff as a full-time deputy since 2025, prior serving as a reserve deputy for 2½ years. Deputy Muhammad has served as a deputy since August 2024. Both Owens and Muhammad work the afternoon shift.
