I have such fond memories of the early days of #wxtwitter This site is not like that anymore and I've spent less & less time here since 2016. If you're looking for a collaborative space for discussing weather in real time, come find me and a vibrant community of mets on #wxsky!
A symposium this Tuesday at @AMSTropical honors hurricane research leader and pioneer Frank D. Marks Jr., an AMS multi-award-winner who has flown through the eye of a hurricane more than 500 times.

@AndyHazelton Yeah, and the admin is defunding and discrediting science more generally, so I don't know why it needs to be framed as a climate lab specifically.
Severe thunderstorms are expected across most of the Mid Atlantic tomorrow. Follow our neighboring offices to ensure you stay weather aware and get forecast updates, even when you are traveling.

@JonahDispatch@johncoy1975 I'd love to see more obj analysis from a historian or poli scientist who has studied the history of corruption by US presidents and their families (e.g., presidents & emoluments clause). The media coverage is mainly outrage/hysteria with few facts. Perhaps interview some experts?
Scoop: US weather forecasting is in worse shape than previously known, with 30 NWS forecast offices missing meteorologists-in-charge and about a dozen offices at risk of no longer serving their communities 24/7. https://t.co/1r3OGhFxWV
@therobdale@DerekOrtt I don't spend much time on X or any social media anymore. I have a "tropics" list that I check occasionally and some lists on bluesky. Social media has been very bad for my mental health.
@DerekOrtt Well, the deficit is projected to grow faster between IRS cuts and Congress's current budget resolution, according to multiple nonpartisan organizations. X's doge account is not a reliable source of information.
New AMS Statement and Special Report: The Federal agencies in the public sector provide a foundational role in supporting the rest of the weather enterprise. A failure of these systems would be catastrophic.

The NWS is currently experiencing significant staffing challenges across multiple regions. Alaska, Central, and Western regions are particularly strained, with vacancy rates exceeding 20% across these Regions, which is directly impacting critical forecasting services.
These are @NHC_Atlantic's mean forecast errors since 1990. A forecast 5 days out in 2024 was as accurate as one 2 days out in 2000.
For saving society billions, thank the NHC team, @NOAA's modeling investments, and dedicated researchers like my friend Andy.
He was fired today.
