@Court_Reinland @asunapg @asanwal my answer was unclear; mc/visa will refund the cardholder & then they'll try to get these funds back (easy case from merchant, hard case from scammers). the bank issues the card. if either bank/merchant have too high chargeback rate, mc/visa may drop them

@carmguti the OP is technically right, but technology is not the major reason that visa/mc became the giants they are today, and it's not the reason they will continue to be giants

@carmguti the complicated part is not the technology (although visa did pioneer some distributed systems stuff back in the day). the difficult part is convincing all sides of the market (banks, merchants, consumers) to use your product

@asanwal they're not wrong, mc & visa *are* the 'perfect do-nothing middleman business', and the tech by today's standard is nothing crazy. ofc, the mistake is to discount the decades of effort required to reach the current state, and the decades more it'd take to replace them
