Recently I've noticed ChatGPT avoids answering my question fully, and ends with a hook designed to keep me talking.
My guess is there's a team at OpenAI with "conversational retention" KPIs — eg what % of users reply, what % of sessions extend past a few turns — and their job is just to keep us talking.
This makes a sick internet worse and feels like the next iteration of the attention economy 😩 right now it's clumsy enough that we can tell it's engagement bait, but over time I expect this to get much subtler and harder to detect.
For example, your coding assistant could solve a problem but mentions there's a more elegant approach if you'd like to see it. A therapist bot works through what you brought up but says it noticed a pattern from other sessions you might want to explore.
The incentive is user retention rather than directly helping us. What makes this hard for us: a model optimizing for our engagement and a model trying to be helpful can look identical on the surface. The information asymmetry makes it so we can't tell — a classic market failure.
Agentic workflows will enable the AI assistants we all deserved for long.
We will see iOS & Android coming up with dev toolkits on this pretty soon. That would allow app developers to connect with the assistants natively and let users complete most app actions via the assistant.
The reason LLM fails at understanding world model is because Human Languages are not a good model/abstraction to describe world.
Try this: Describe every corner of your house and all furniture objects in plain English.
You can’t. We have geometry and trigonometry for that.

there aren’t many good resources for learning about the effects of AI / automation on labor / markets so I put together my own reading list, with notes for the papers I’ve already finished:
