I am thrilled to announce the release of my new book, 'The October 7 War: Israel’s Battle for Security in Gaza.'
While I've covered numerous Gaza wars, this one has been harrowing and long. Awakened by Hamas rocket fire on October 7, 2023, I began covering the conflict from its very first day.
🚨 NEW: Kaylub Giamanco, the HERO father who TOOK OUT the Bend, Oregon elementary school shooter last week, tells the story for the first time
"I started hearing children PLEADING for their lives. And then I started hearing gunfire and I just started army crawling faster and faster. And I told myself, this is probably the last thing that I'm ever going to do."
"I have to go in. People are going to die."
"I crawled through the bottom window that was shot out and continued onto the rug inside where there's a little breezeway with stairs."
"And then the special needs classroom was to my left. At that point, I was on the ground on my hands and knees. I re-racked my weapon to make sure that a live round came so that I knew that I was ready to go."
"And then I peeked through the window. And at this point I found my opportunity. And I'd seen a teacher on the left struggling with the gunman on the right with the rifle."
"And I knew that they were on both sides of me, and I knew that he did not know that I was there. And so at that point I swung the door out and open and I stepped in and I fired."
This man deserves the Presidential Medal of FREEDOM! 🇺🇸

UPDATE: Miguel Alonso Maldonado Soriano, 27, caused hundreds of thousands of dollars of damage when he took a sledgehammer to a limestone statue of the iconic Iwo Jima flag-raising that was erected near Quantico.
Of odd note
He served as a prosecution lawyer in the 1925 Scopes Trial in Dayton, Tennessee, where he debated defense attorney Clarence Darrow. He was against the theory of evolution
In 1896, William Jennings Bryan traveled about 18,000 miles by train and gave over 600 speeches to an estimated 5 million people.
His opponent, William McKinley, never left Canton, Ohio. Delegations came to him.
McKinley won.
For most of the 1800s, running hard for president was seen as undignified. A gentleman did not beg for the job.
After his nomination in 1860, Abraham Lincoln gave no campaign speeches. Stephen Douglas broke tradition, toured the country and lost.
James Garfield won from his front porch in Mentor, Ohio, in 1880.
But even though Bryan didn't win, he wrote the playbook that most modern politicians still use.

"The proliferation of air defense threats is prompting a rethink of conventional, expensive, and hard-to-restock air defense systems."

His Majesty King Abdullah visited the Jordanian Christians injured during the terrorist attack on a church in Jordan. The King wore a military uniform, signaling that Jordan views this as a battle against terrorism.
Full support for his majesty in this war!
Sharing a few thoughts from my trip last week to northern Iraq (Erbil and Sulaimaniya), my first to Iraq since 2020. I came many times as Reuters journalist since 2010 - Iraq is one of my favourite countries. Lovely people who suffer so much despite the enormous oil wealth.
There is a border in Croatia that was created to stop the Ottoman Empire more than 400 years ago. It disappeared, technically, in the 19th century.
Then, astonishingly, the same border reappeared during the Balkan wars of the 1990s.
This was the Military Frontier.

In Remembrance of Beirut
#OTD in 1983, a terrorist bombing at the Marine Barracks in Beirut, Lebanon, claimed the lives of 241 U.S. service members, including 220 Marines, serving as part of the Multinational Force in Lebanon.
On October 23, a suicide bomber drove a truck laden with explosives into the barracks where U.S. Marines were stationed on a peacekeeping mission. The attack devastated the building and became one of the deadliest days in Marine Corps History.
The Marines in Beirut were deployed to help restore peace and stability amid escalating violence in Lebanon. Despite the dangers they faced, they carried out their mission with courage, professionalism, and an unwavering commitment to one another.
The Beirut bombing left a lasting mark on the #MarineCorps and the nation. We remember the lost lives, honor the wounded and survivors, and recognize the families and loved ones who continue to carry the weight of that day. Their sacrifice remains woven into the legacy of every #Marine who has answered the call to serve.
Today, we pause to remember the 241 American service members who never made it home and honor their courage, sacrifice, and devotion to duty.
They came in peace. They will never be forgotten.

@gbrew24 Right I’m just saying in contrast to my previous post, there is another view that thinks it would collapse quickly
When do complex entrenched regimes collapse ;
It will go on for years, even if the regime falls. Possibly a decade ; this is the reality of complex wars, consider Iraq after 1991; unless you get a quick deal as in Kosovo using air power; but that was not an attempt to remove the Serbian government
New report just released by The Telegraph reveals that Putin's favorite activist, CODEPINK's Medea Benjamin, was in contact with sanctioned Iranian intelligence handlers who viewed her as an "asset" for pushing "Iran’s influence and narratives."

Opinion: Our national security depends on technological independence, and investing in defense research today will determine Israel's military strength tomorrow.

Reporting and recent comments suggest that new US strikes will not aim to simply degrade Iran's capabilities or reduce their position in the strait (i.e. what the US attempted with strikes in July/August).
Rather, there is a body of opinion inside the admin that another round of strikes would "finish off" Iran, pushing it to the point where it will capitulate to US demands, agree to a deal that favored the US, allowing the war to end with US victory.
One can dispute the validity of this position. But it seems to be what is informing US thinking.
