25-year-old-me NEVER would’ve believed she’d one day be the keynote speaker at the Vermont Suicide Prevention Symposium today.
25-year-old me was too suicidal to think she’d even be alive today.
So grateful to have been wrong.
Don’t believe everything you think!
I love this anthem to authenticity. Sometimes, your decisions will hurt people. Sometimes, you will break someone’s heart. You have to be willing to make choices that hurt another person if you don’t want them to keep hurting you.❤️
We've heard a lot about tragic outcomes of people with suicidal thoughts using ChatGPT. Some of the things it's reportedly done are awful, but should we also talk about the people it's helped survive a suicidal crisis? I think so.

@aaditsh @andymaccallum27 This is a great example of correlation not automatically equaling causation. Could it be that people who already aren’t complex thinkers, who have inattention, etc. are more drawn to short form videos than others?
Pet peeve, & if you do this sorry/not sorry:
Ph.D.(c)
Doctoral candidate, sure. That's accurate. But the Ph.D. is a degree, so until that (c) can be removed because you have a Ph.D., it's best not to claim the degree.
If you've lost a colleague to suicide -- first, I'm sorry. It's tragic and stressful. Second, I was asked to post this recruitment flier for a study, and it might interest you.

Yes.
(This is one of those times, I think, when the comments are as important as the post.)

When Jay Valusek’s daughter died by suicide, the pain seemed impossible to bear. Ultimately, he learned ways to cope that can help others w/deep pain or loss.
I'm thrilled to share his tender, beautifully written story as a guest article:

@existentialgoof Thanks for the thoughtful reply. I thought the topic would resonate with you, especially the question at the very end. I hope you do duplicate your comment so that readers on the site can see it, too. You make good, thought-provoking points for all of us in the field to consider.
It's tragic a young woman killed herself & nobody but ChatGPT knew her intentions. My new blog post looks at why people keep suicidality secret, with or without ChatGPT. It also asks the question: What needs to change so fewer people feel scared to tell?
