Under the law, a "workman" gets tax exemptions on retrenchment pay. But a mid-career professional who loses their job at 45 or 50 is taxed on every single rupee of their severance. Facing an ageist job market with no safety net, how is this fair? #TaxingSurvival@nsitharaman

@sgarg32@nsitharaman A layoff is involuntary and often sudden; taxing the severance adds fiscal stress when the person has no regular income and may struggle with EMIs, rent, and family expenses.
The Finance Ministry should urgently make the amendment and exempt this from tax.
@sgarg32@nsitharaman Current system feels incredibly unfair to Pvt sector employees. We pay >30% in taxes during our service, yet there is no support from Govt afterward. Isn't this a form of systemic neglect? Govt
must address these outdated laws & protect who have spent their lives fueling economy
Industries across country seeing massive restructurings. Severance isn't a performance bonus; it’s a bridge to survive. We urgently request Finance Ministry to amend Section 17(3) and exempt severance pay for involuntary layoffs.Stop taxing survival. #IncomeTaxIndia#MiddleClass
Private-sector employees pay up to 30% income tax for decades with zero social security or unemployment benefits. When laid off, the Government taxes their severance—their only survival fund. This is fundamentally unjust. #StopSeveranceTax#IndiaLayoffs@FinMinIndia@PMOIndia
